Spencer maintained that mock reviewers rated the game highly enough during development that everyone felt confident in the game’s trajectory. Furthermore, Phil Spencer even admitted that Microsoft should’ve started monitoring development much sooner and noted that Redfall’s most damning feedback wasn’t its technical state but its unrealized creative potential. It’d be too easy to just say Arkane is fatcatting around now that they’re owned by Microsoft because the game’s been in development for 5 years, long before the Bethesda buyout in 2020. It’s hard to suss out where this project went wrong. Sure, Deathloop should be criticized for its compromises, but having now finished Redfall, we the public have officially been transferred from frying pan into fire. But I didn’t know how good I had it then. I recently raked that game over the coals because it didn’t live up to the promise of its time travel premise and seemed to ape the characteristics of immersive sims without offering much in the way of agency or satisfaction. A lot of what you’ve heard is true, but is there anything here worth rooting for or is its weapons grade mediocrity too much to overcome?īut before we commence to the feast, I do think I owe Arkane at least a truce about their previous game Deathloop. Ok, but seriously, we need to talk about Redfall. There I said it and I don’t care who knows it! Yes, it has an insane amount of technical problems, and yes, it has terrible mission design, and yes, its shooting mechanics are passable at best, but you know what no one’s willing to admit? It’s easily the best game that ever came out on May 2nd, 2023. Reviewers of all stripes have dogpiled on Redfall and it’s disgusting. Guys, I’m disgusted by the gaming industry.
